Cary Eid 2009 Gift

This gift came from Bangladesh donated by the family of Mr. Mohammad and Mrs. Sadia Fatmi from Raleigh, NC.

Description: This wall hanging piece of art is hand made from bright colored, patterned, pure cotton pieces sewed together like a quilt. This piece is made by a group of women empowered by the “microcredit” program of Grameen Bank established by Bangladeshi Noble Laureate, Muhammad Yunus. This unique piece of art is gifted to NC Eid Festival, Inc. by Bangladeshi-American family of Mr. Mohammed and Mrs. Saida Fatmi and was presented to Town of Cary's Mayor Pro Tem, Julie Aberg Robison and Counciler Erve Portman by the Congressman David Price and NC Eid Festival, Inc. Board Chair, Nadeem Iqbal.
About Bangladesh:
Bangladesh, the seventh most populous country with 3rd largest Muslim population is a land of ancient kingdoms where kingdom of Gangaridai was established in seventh century BC. Till the dawn of Islam in 12th century, Gupta, Harsha, and Buddhist Pala dynasties ruled this region. Under the Mughal empire, this region became economically important.
Here the legendry fine cotton cloth was produced by the skilled farmers, so thin and smooth that it is said it could have passed through a ring without breaking the crease.
